The Smardt control system is quite remarkable.

It connects and monitors 150 control points in the compressor and can communicate to BAS systems using ModBus, BacNet and LON FT10 protocols. Because the chiller control software was developed by the developer of the compressor testing software, the complete compressor maps are referenced in real time during operation, allowing the compressor rotation speed and guide vane position to very closely match the actual load during operation. The result is that the compressor always operates at the optimum point of the performance curve and at the lowest kW draw available.

Further, the control system includes the ability to optimize variable evaporator flow pumps, variable condenser flow pumps, and remote evaporative tower fan speed according to prevailing ambient conditions. The system learns the performance at each stage of the system and using a continuously iterative process, adjusts each parameter during operation. The result is a zero-loss completely optimized system from system load to ultimate heat rejection to the atmosphere.

The control system includes an embedded Web and FTP server to allow users to remotely monitor system performance and recall all of the operational logs. For critical duty applications, we can provide redundant systems in 2N or N+1 configuration with controls for automatic failover sequencing.

Smardt’s air and water cooled chiller range – 60 TR through 900 TR are designed for a 30-year operating life, with lifetime operating costs the lowest in the market.

The Smardt chiller range is managed by one of two controls options.

The PowerPax PLC-based microprocessor system has been used on most of the installed chiller sites so far, demonstrating how well the state-of-the-art controls software maximizes operating efficiencies and minimizes maintenance and operating costs.

This system provides several access levels for plant operators and commissioning, and offers a wide variety of options for flexible operation and optimization of power consumption, maximizing time spent operating at compressor sweet spots.

The Kiltech controls system, available since December 2005, allows optimization of single compressor operation and optimization of multiple compressor operation while enabling a rich array of communication options.

Both PowerPax and Kiltech systems will be supported for the 30-year life of each chiller installed.

PowerPax electronic expansion valves and valve controllers are used exclusively throughout the Smardt chiller range.

A rich array of download information is routinely available, protected by multiple levels of encryption. Remote monitoring adds a new layer of operating protection for the chiller circuit, and at very low cost.
